This summer residence for a large family takes its cues from its panoramic ocean front site and also from the family’s relaxed approach to summers on the Vineyard. The core of the house is an open living and dining space. An extensive band of large windows facing the ocean transforms the living room into a modern version of the porch, with French doors open onto a protective courtyard. Finishes are straightforward and refined—limestone and wood floors, and painted wood and plaster walls.
Three primary volumes form the basic L-shape of the house, establishing a hierarchy of rooms within, while also creating a sequence of outdoor spaces that provide varying levels of exposure to the elements. The house’s exterior acknowledges the island vernacular, using bleached cedar shingles as the primary material. Mahogany trim and mahogany doors and windows combine refined detailing with a low-maintenance sensibility, reinforcing the building’s longevity in this demanding environment.
This project was executed in collaboration with Karen Swett Architect.
