Since establishing his firm over 20 years ago, Charles Rose has developed a significant body of work of cultural, institutional, federal and residential projects. While varied in scope, style and complexity, each project is linked by a set of ideas that Rose has used with great success in designing more than 50 buildings. A careful response to the surrounding context; consideration for natural light and exterior space; innovative, sculptural forms; and rigorous senses of craft using durable building materials are notable hallmarks of Rose’s work. Under Charles Rose’s leadership the firm has completed major projects throughout the United States, working in widely varying settings and responding to the particular opportunities and challenges they represent: physical, ecological, cultural, and historical. Two notable projects that were recently completed are the 22,000 SF performing arts center at The Putney School and the 65,000 SF campus center at Brandeis University. Recent design commissions include the Jackson Hole History Museum, a library and studio building for the Oregon College of Art & Craft, a new admissions building for Brandeis University and a gateway project for Queens Botanical Garden. Currently, the firm is developing two projects for The University of South Dakota; a 72,000 SF business school (the result of a national competition) and a 76,000 SF student union. The firm is also designing an office building at the Pease International Tradeport for the General Services Administration’s Design Excellence Program. Additionally, the firm was a finalist in the following competitions: The Fred M. Rogers Center for Early Learning and Children's Media and Conference Center at St. Vincent College; the Jonathan Nelson Fitness Center at Brown University; the NEA-sponsored design competition for a performing and visual arts school in Dallas; a new business school at American University of Beirut and the Temple Beth Am in Miami. Rose’s work has received numerous distinguished awards, including two national design awards from the American Institute of Architects, two American Architecture awards and a national design award from the GSA. His work has been widely published in: Architectural Record, Architecture, Progressive Architecture, Landscape Architecture, GA, The Architectural Review, BusinessWeek and A+U. Books include Phaidon Atlas of Contemporary World Architecture (Phaidon Publishing Ltd.); All American: Innovations in American Architecture (Thames and Hudson); 40 Under 40: International Architects for the New Millennium (Taschen); The New American House 3: Innovations in Residential Design and Construction (Watson-Guptill); Site Architecture (University of Michigan); and Contemporary American Architects: Volume IV (Taschen). Princeton Architectural Press published Charles Rose, Architect in 2006. In addition to his professional responsibilities, Rose has been a visiting professor at Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Michigan, Rice University, the University of Virginia and Rhode Island School of Design.
