An installation for a land based arts group intended to be a reflection space that heightens our connection to our natural environment and shows that our built endeavors can be harmonious with the landscape. Steel beams cantilever from the hill and a cedar platform folds down and dissipates out over the slope. As you walk out to the end of the structure, the spaces between the cedar planks grow farther and farther apart, and you start to feel the ground falling away below you. You are floating above the hill and there is nothing separating you and the land.
Due to the remoteness of the site and environmentally sensitive agenda of the project, great strides were taken to ensure the impact of the construction process was minimized as much as possible. All digging in the rocky hard hillside was done by hand, no power saws or nailers were used, and the ½ ton beams were rolled up the hill on wood rollers and rails with a hand wench. That care is felt when experiencing the serenity of the space because the result is a quite, man-made piece that seems to blend into the hillside and the surrounding junipers.
