Missoule, Montana - 1996
This residence was built on a wooded 20-acre property in the foothills of Missoula. The house nestles into the hillside and opens up to views down the Bitterroot Valley and out over the city. The client is a musician with need for a large studio and small living area. The son of a farmer, his initial aspiration was to renovate an existing barn. This proved impractical, but the farm building vernacular remained as the architectural departure point for the new residence. The house utilizes concrete masonry walls, re-claimed timber frame construction, and a pair of 60-foot long glu-lam trusses to support the roof above the studio. The roof is copper and the exterior cladding is cedar. Interior finishes include fir cabinets and paneling, site-claimed stone hearths, re-claimed brick tiles and custom forged iron railings.
