About

Many of our customers come to us with strong ideas about their project and the way they expect it to be delivered. Thus we attribute our solutions to the vision of the customer and our process. That is why our projects look so different from one another; they are expressive of the individuals that commission them.

Our responsibility is to understand and develop the customer’s vision. From there we then assess, plan and construct. We are a design firm that constructs buildings and building components. Our facility is a design and construction office and fabrication shop.

We build what we design because that’s what makes us happy. As it turns out this integration is not only efficient but it creates a rich intellectual capital through communication across the fence that often separates design and construction. We believe our activities in construction improve us as designers and our inherent understanding of the design makes us better constructors. I like to tell people that we have removed the fence. We integrate and utilize conventions in design and construction to generate extraordinary projects efficiently.

This broad focus has proven to be beneficial in assessing, planning and constructing projects for residential and commercial customers.

People

Jay Hargrave, AIA
Principal

Jay received his Bachelor from the School of Architecture at the University of Texas at Austin in 1990 and an MBA from UT as well in 2004. He also attended the Stone Yard Institute at St. John the Divine, New York City. Jay served as an adjunct professor at the University of Texas School of Architecture during the spring terms in 1999 and 2000. He has achieved high levels of competency with various materials such as steel, wood, concrete, and masonry, producing art pieces, furniture, and architectural components for clients and charity.
Janell Cottam
Principal

Janell holds a Bachelor from the University of Texas at Austin, School of Architecture - 1990, and became certified as a Registered Architect in the state of Texas in 1996. She served as the Vice President of Austin Women in Architecture, 1992-1993, and has spoken at conferences for aspiring young women. Janell is also an avid painter and furniture designer.
Beth Engelland
Principal

Beth graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a Bachelor of Arts in 1993 and from Arizona State University with Masters in Architecture in 1996. During school, Beth worked with Habitat for Humanity in the Mississippi Delta and participated in a pilot program involving student design/build in spanish Phoenix. After school, she explored alternative building methods on an off-grid residential project deep in the Navajo country of New Mexico. Cottam Hargrave welcomed Beth as a fabricator of architectural details and she soon transitioned into project management. Now a partner, her work encompasses schematic design, design detail, quality control, on-site coordination and dimensional control, and communication with both clients and subcontractors. Beth negotiates the perfection of drawing with the reality of the site ”making the rubber meet the road.” Beth is also a member of Austin's Residential Design and Compatibility Commission (RDCC), which hears appeals for remodel, addition, and new construction planning.
