James’s training includes a Bachelor of Architecture, an Associate’s degree in Engineering Technology, and a Post-Professional Master of Architecture. While studying architecture at the university level, he complemented his education with studies in literature, history and philosophy before joining arch11 in 1993.
James approaches architecture from a comprehensive, hands-on perspective and has a history of making things. For him, the act of making is not only a means of completing a task, but is also a mode of self-expression and a focused state-of-being. He has made a living as a framer, boat builder, pool builder and furniture maker.
In addition to his work with Arch11, James taught drawing at the University of Arkansas – Little Rock and Louisiana Tech University; and Architectural Design and Furniture History and Design at the University of Colorado, College of Architecture and Planning. He is a recipient of the Alpha Rho Chi Medal for Design Excellence and the Emerging Impressions Award from the AIA.
