Although this historic landmark Seattle home was maintained in pristine vintage condition, the master bathroom was in disrepair and in need of a major remodel. The homeowners worked closely with Heidi Helgeson, architect at H2D Architecture + Design, to develop a design sensitive to the home’s historic nature. The original architect designed the home to respond to the site with an open plan flowing from inside out to a south facing courtyard. This indoor-outdoor connection, a key feature of NW regional modernism, was an important factor in the design for the new master bathroom. The remodel also required sensitivity to the home's historic nature, including materials contiguous to the midcentury era of the home. rnThe finished master bathroom is a delight to all who enter; the original pocket door opens to a room swathed in natural light. A unique wall mounted cabinet, Wallbanger by Loll Designs, and floating double vanity with Ecotop counter provide generous space for two people. Heated floors lead two steps down to a sunken tub/shower framed by two benches and walls tiled in handmade blue and gray Heath tile. The tub/shower is designed with two shower heads, a large niche, and connection to a private patio area. To avoid sacrificing space in the bathroom for a standard door, the large casement window in the tub/shower provides an opening for one to step out onto the patio. The patio, just large enough for a table for two, is nestled in the private rear yard.
