Suyama Peterson Deguchi — Medina, Washington

Urban Cabin is a residence designed by Suyama Peterson Deguchi in Medina, Washington, for a couple seeking to downsize after many years on the site. The clients, interested in a more pared-down lifestyle, asked for a house that would reflect their desire for simplicity in a context characterized by larger-scale homes. Drawing inspiration from a rudimentary picnic shelter, the project prioritized essential spaces, minimizing excess both in form and program. The house is organized beneath a single, long roof plane, with a solid east wall shielding the interior from the adjacent public park. The structure is partially recessed into the site to foster a stronger connection with the landscape. West-facing elevations are defined by generous glazing, admitting views of existing gardens and ponds. Deep roof overhangs and terraces beneath the shed roof establish transitional zones that extend living spaces outdoors. Exterior siding continues through the interior, while carefully detailed windows help dissolve the distinction between inside and outside.
