See-Through House

See-Through House is a 3,100-square-foot single-family residence completed in 2015 by Koning Eizenberg in Santa Monica, California. The barn-shaped main roof was derived from the maximum parameters set by local planning codes, resulting in a form that nods to rural references fitting the clients’ backgrounds and interest in informal, communal living. The design responds to the brief by fostering connections across the site and accommodating a family's desire for shared and adaptable spaces. The house features sliding screens that can be adjusted for privacy and sun shading, enabling the main living areas to open up and allow continuous social space from the front yard, through the interior, to the rear. Skylights above the pegboard-clad stairwell provide daylight to the home’s core. On the upper level, a communal children's bathroom includes an open vanity area adjoining a lounge, encouraging interaction between siblings. The guesthouse roof, shaped with reference to a Quaker bonnet from a family portrait, visually frames a sequence of both indoor and outdoor spaces across the property.
