Shelter Island House

Shelter Island House is a 2,500-square-foot family retreat, designed by Koning Eizenberg and completed in 2022, located on Shelter Island in New York. Conceived as a solution to the site’s seasonal variations—hot, humid summers and cold winters—the house incorporates features requested by the client, such as screened and shaded decks, large fireplaces, an outdoor shower, and opportunities for cross-ventilation. A post and beam structural system allows the house to blend with its wooded surroundings, largely screened from street view. The porch, supported on wood posts set at four-foot intervals, runs the full length of the building and leads back to the kitchen, where a clerestory brings natural light into the interior spaces. The exterior uses unfinished wood, designed to weather and gray over time. Operable wood vents support summer airflow, while deep sunlight in winter adds warmth. Photovoltaic panels on the roof support the building’s energy efficiency.
