Irvine Elemental

Laidlaw Schultz Architects

Hallway in the Irvine Elemental project with skylights creating shadow patterns on stone tile walls.

Irvine Elemental is a contemporary residence by Laidlaw Schultz Architects in Laguna Beach, California. Sited along the edge of Crystal Cove State Park, the house is organized into three discrete wings positioned around a central courtyard, where an outdoor pool and spa serve as focal points. The design prioritizes privacy and supports indoor-outdoor living for a family that entertains often. Floor-to-ceiling glazing connects the kitchen and living areas to ocean views and natural light, while fostering a sense of openness that blurs the transition between inside and out. The material palette reflects a restrained, modern approach, combining plastered walls, natural stone, and wood finishes. Custom-designed furniture and millwork reinforce the minimal aesthetic, with details such as handcrafted kitchen cabinetry and a bespoke dining table contributing to the home’s atmosphere. Throughout, fixtures by Dornbracht and Waterworks provide a refined counterpoint to the tactile surfaces. The interiors are conceived to balance comfort and clarity, drawing influence from California modernism as well as varied references in art, music, and literature.
