Palisades House

A 1960’s summer house in Pacific Palisades on a steep, sloping site is completely reworked to open up to ocean views and provide indoor, outdoor living on four floors of new decks. The tony location, high on a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean, affords unparalleled vistas across Los Angles to the south with views of the ocean from Catalina Island to Malibu. Inside, a new stair connects all floors while wrapping around skinny metal tubes that hold up the floating wooden treads that culminates in a large, clear glass skylight at the rooftop.  Glazing is enlarged and re-configured on all levels  to maximize natural lighting and views while sliding glass door panels reinforce the extension of interior living space to outdoor decks. Materials are kept simple with smooth white stucco contrasting with the dark gray steel of the deck structure and railings.  A new cantilevered, concrete pool and deck area is included at the lower portion of the site that emulates the rectangular forms of the decks above that create cascading outdoor areas that face to the Pacific Ocean.
