Smith & Vansant Architects — Sugar Hill, New Hampshire
Contemporary Weekend House is a 2,900-square-foot vacation residence designed by Smith & Vansant Architects on a wooded, sloping site in Sugar Hill, New Hampshire, close to the White Mountains. The design responds to the site’s topography and the clients’ preference for a spare, contemporary style. Visitors reach the house along a woodland path and cross a bridge before entering, with the structure oriented to maximize southern light and western views across a nearby pond. The house sits low in the landscape, making it largely hidden from across the water. The plan divides the program into distinct zones suited to vacation use and hosting frequent guests. Principal living areas are open and interconnected, with expansive glazing and direct access to decks and a screened porch. Entry and mudroom spaces are designed for efficiency, offering ample, durable storage for seasonal outdoor gear. The master suite occupies the upper floor beneath gently curving roofs, oriented to the view, while the lower level accommodates three guest bedrooms, ensuring privacy between the owners and their visitors.
