Sea Star

Sea Star, completed in 2023 by Steve Kent in Malibu, California, is a 6,200-square-foot residence shaped by its hillside setting above a seasonal creek. The brief called for a home that integrates expansive living spaces with views toward the Pacific. The design orients its L-shaped plan around an infinity pool, adjacent to a creek and extensive coastal foliage. A 900-square-foot guest studio is connected to the site via a series of corten steel terraces that descend from the main home. The main volume comprises an open kitchen, dining, and living area unified around a freestanding fireplace and wrapped on three sides in glass. Entry from the subterranean garage is via a glass-enclosed floating stair and a landscaped courtyard, leading up to the primary living level. The master suite features a sunset-facing ocean view and has access to a rooftop patio encircled by a low Japanese-inspired garden. Glass walls and outdoor terraces facilitate connections between indoor spaces and the landscape.
