Steve Kent — Malibu, 2021
Broad Beach is a 4,600-square-foot house in Malibu, designed by Steve Kent and completed in 2021. The project includes a main residence, a detached 650-square-foot guest house, and a pool. The design responds to its beachfront location by creating strong indoor-outdoor connections and maximizing natural light throughout the main living spaces. Large light wells are cut through the building's volume, allowing sunlight to penetrate deeply into the first floor living areas. The interior layout emphasizes openness, using a post and beam structure with most interior walls removed. The architecture features detailed Japanese-inspired tongue and groove joinery at the wood beam connections, and exposed steel beams support expansive glass walls facing the beach. These elements combine to create visual continuity between inside and outside spaces.
