House on Fire Island is a summer residence located in the Pines, a resort community on Fire Island, New York. The brief called for a house that responds to the pragmatic, builder-driven typology common in East Coast shoreline towns, while infusing a more vibrant character typical of its coastal setting. The project retains familiar details and materials but reinterprets the house's volume, presenting it as a continuous skin of woven cedar boards. This exterior strategy, which will weather to match neighboring homes, provides thermal enclosure and imparts a subtle identity distinct from the prevalent box-like forms. Generous windows frame views and allow daylight to animate the interior, departing from local conventions of more opaque facades.
