This eight unit housing proposal represents an exercise in high-density urban living organized around a lush on-grade interior court with partial subterranean parking around its perimeter. A series of townhouses stack and interlock into a circuit of woven spaces that draw inspiration from historic West Hollywood courtyard typologies nearby. Tall volumes and 'thru-spaces' highlight the opposition of the peaceful court contained within and the expansive views of the L.A. basin revealed from its upper levels. Because of difficult zero lot line adjacencies it abandons a more conventional south oriented scheme in favor of a carefully orchestrated north facing garden.rnrnThis proposal abandons the elevator-based horizontal access schemes of its neighboring counterparts in order to create a vertical-based walk-up living environment. Interlocking townhouses afford greater flexibility for occupants to tailor individual lifestyles. All access is defined by the courtyard while the unit's character cannot help but being influenced by it.rnrnHigh density housing projects generally rely on subterranean parking, leaving an artificial plane as the new ground floor. Instead our proposal takes care to minimize the parking footprint in order to ensure a natural ground plane. A true plantable garden emerges to reflect the spirit of the local court tradition.rnrnTownhouse Types:rnThe Gatekeeper: Two story townhouse at garden level that balances the street activity with the serenity of the landscaped court within. A home-office space drives the daytime orientation of the unit.rnrnThe Birdwatcher: An interlocking three story walk-up unit that celebrates an interplay between the garden activity below and the expansive views over the city beyond.rnrnThe Arborist: A interlocking two story unit that sees green throughout all it apertures. The common central garden court is linked through the unit to a private garden on its opposite side.rnrnThe Entertainer: Two story townhouse with open plans to invite evening vistas out over the city lights. An outdoor dining terrace encourages peaceful repose at the end of the day.rn
