Description

Harper West Hollywood carefully integrates new 21st century residences around a local, historically designated site plan that houses the 1923 Mission revival style, Ramona apartments. The Ramona structures two front buildings and rear building façade of the Ramona property have been restored in the spirit of the Secretary of the Interior’s standards for rehabilitation as an example of the City’s historic past. Key landscaping elements and trees remain, walkways and paths were replicated, and exterior surfaces were restored to reflect their original state. Water features and site amenities help to blend the historic court space with its new companion courtyard to its north. Today, the historic site continues to reflect a larger history of the region and represent an early modest example of work force-based, courtyard housing in West Hollywood.rnrnHarper West Hollywood aspires to preserve a local culture resource while providing much needed new sustainable housing in the city of West Hollywood. Old and new are brought together with a dual courtyard site strategy that embraces smart growth principles and maximizes exposure to the intimate gardens, common court spaces and panoramic views beyond. Inspired by the Leland Bryant townhouses and courtyard units of the 1920’s, two new housing blocks are configured in an “L” shape at the northern and eastern perimeters of the site. A careful interweaving of diverse unit types- flats, scissoring cross-over units, mezzanine lofts and interlocking townhouse units- stack over four and five stories to create a unique type of housing environment for living in the 21st century. Individual living spaces incorporate large expanses of glass and tie into private garden spaces, decks, balconies and terraces to capture impressive city views. Flexible interiors encourage change and modification with the seasons and the particular lifestyle needs of its owners. Open plan kitchens units, transformable bathroom pods, and dramatic ceilings further enhance the light, airy feeling of the interior spaces. Private open spaces, extensive landscaping and external sunscreens help to reinforce the environmental sensitivity of the design. rn
