Westport Modern Home by ZeroEnergy Design is a 2,960-square-foot modern residence located in Boston, Massachusetts. Conceived as a full-time dwelling for owners relocating from Wayland, the brief called for a minimalist house with low power consumption, high durability, and net-zero or better energy performance. The design references the region’s agrarian structures with two gable-roofed volumes—a primary residence and a detached garage—set within an open meadow, emphasizing connection to the outdoors. The main house is organized around an open plan with lofty, double-height living spaces. Abundant windows provide exterior views on three sides from nearly any point inside, enhancing spatial expansiveness. Charred wood cladding and other natural materials anchor the volumes visually and materially. Large lift-and-slide glass doors open to a south-facing shaded deck, extending living areas outdoors while filtering light and heat. Guest bedrooms are designed to function as home offices, while a ground-floor guest suite allows for future accessibility needs. The detached garage features a second-floor loft for flexible use, oriented to overlook the meadow. A rooftop solar array supports net-positive energy performance.
