dSPACE Studio — Chicago, IL

Art House is a penthouse residence by dSPACE Studio, positioned atop a 1930s parking structure in Chicago that was transformed through adaptive reuse. The project retains the building’s original Art Deco façade while introducing a modern interior designed to showcase the owner’s art collection. The brief called for an elegant home reminiscent of a boutique hotel in Paris, leading to a floor plan that emphasizes sequential movement and connection between spaces. Expansive windows offer treetop views of Lincoln Park and Lake Michigan, situating the home firmly within its urban context. Within, the interior by Project Interiors and dSPACE Studio is defined by a restrained palette of textured materials, selected to complement the client’s artwork. Circulation hinges around a four-sided fireplace, which organizes the public areas while enabling gatherings and conversation. The mechanical core, clad in blackened steel and ribbed wood, forms a strong architectural element in the plan, featuring a concealed pantry and a bar accessed through a pass-through portal. Lighting is carefully layered throughout, with guided art lights and ambient fixtures creating a range of atmospheres. In the primary bedroom, a custom lightbox designed by the architects frames a tailored headboard and reinforces the focus on art and material detail.
