The Wedgwood
Malboeuf Bowie Architecture — 2016
The Wedgwood is a single-family residence in Seattle, renovated by Malboeuf Bowie Architecture in 2016 to meet Built Green 5-Star standards. The project focused on reusing the existing home’s foundation, minimizing site impact within an established neighborhood, and improving energy performance beyond typical new construction. Passive house strategies informed the design, with an emphasis on energy efficiency and durability throughout the remodel. In the remodel, hydronic radiant heating was installed for new floors, and lumber salvaged from the original structure was integrated into the rebuilt areas. The building envelope employs 1.5 inches of rigid exterior foam to mitigate thermal bridging, while open cell foam insulates the wall cavities, producing an even thermal layer. Local and durable materials were prioritized. A 6.7 kW photovoltaic array on the roof meets most of the energy needs, and overall energy use was modeled at 45% below a code-compliant home. The project’s modern character is expressed through its performance-driven material selection and construction methods.
