Studio Zerbey — Montana

Montana Creekside Residence is a 4,550-square-foot house designed by Studio Zerbey in collaboration with Balance Associates Architects. The residence is sited on a Montana property characterized by a steep slope, proximity to a creek, and the challenges of a riparian floodplain. The client sought a substantial connection between interior spaces and the outdoors, leading to a design that navigates significant environmental constraints while prioritizing landscape integration. Alongside the main house, the property includes a detached, two-story garage and 'man cave'. Spatially, the house maintains a discreet presence toward the street, while the rear elevation opens toward the creek with multiple indoor-outdoor spaces. A cantilevered dining deck, anchored by its own fireplace, extends over the landscape to enhance outdoor living. Materials and systems were chosen for sustainability; the building envelope features super-insulation, and a green roof planted with local species further integrates the structure with its surroundings. The inclusion of solar panels supports energy efficiency, reflecting a broader commitment to environmental responsiveness in the home’s construction.
