SsD Architects — 2015

Coulter House, completed by SsD Architects in 2015, consists of an addition constructed above an existing stone structure. The project brief called for expanding the spatial experience of the residence without enlarging its physical footprint. In response, the architects created a new second story to replace the former dilapidated upper level and added an entry porch to bring cohesion between the original and new portions of the house. The addition is articulated as three discrete, light-filled pavilions on the upper floor, set apart to frame views of the landscape and introduce new roof gardens and courtyard spaces. These spatial seams between the pavilions foster both separation and visual connection among rooms. The design employs passive solar techniques, such as roof overhangs for summer shading and winter solar gain, along with stack ventilation, effectively reducing reliance on mechanical cooling and heating. Materials and detailing retain a midcentury modern sensibility while emphasizing minimal, modern lines. The interplay between the existing stone base and the lighter, fragmented upper level establishes a measured contrast between grounded, inward spaces and elevated, outward-looking volumes.
