Axis Architects — Salt Lake City, UT, 2009

H-House is a modern residence completed in 2009 by Axis Architects, situated on the East Bench of Salt Lake City, Utah. The steeply sloped site offered panoramic views toward the Salt Lake Valley and the Great Salt Lake, prompting a brief centered on capturing these western vistas while mitigating the impact of the strong afternoon sun. The design arranges the home’s volumes in relation to the natural incline of the terrain, merging the building with its topography. A prominent horizontal shading element extends from the structure, protecting living areas from solar exposure and contributing to the house’s external identity. Interior spaces are planned to maximize the outlook across the valley, with glazing and spatial organization oriented to frame distant landscapes while maintaining thermal comfort. Materials and finishes are selected to reinforce the residence’s contemporary character and connection with its environment.
