Belmont Freeman Architects — Nassau County, NY, 2019

The Kowalewski Residence is a 3,600-square-foot, three-story house completed in 2019 by Belmont Freeman Architects in a longstanding Nassau County beach community. Designed for a family relocating from New York City, the brief called for a modernist dwelling sensitive to neighborhood context, where prewar art deco and Tudor-style homes are being replaced by larger new builds. The aim was to create a contemporary house that echoed the massing and proportions of the residence that previously stood on the site. Belmont Freeman Architects utilized a restrained palette of white stucco, black slate, glass, and steel, giving the house a geometric character and emphasizing energy efficiency. The street elevation is narrow and private, articulated by an asymmetric vertical slot and a single porthole window. Internally, an open living area extends to the side garden through generous glazing, maintaining continuity with exterior green space and preserving mature trees. The main circulation is a glazed stairwell leading to the second floor, where four bedrooms and three bathrooms are organized along a skylit hall, with access to a roof terrace oriented toward ocean views.
