Chilmark Guest House is a two-bedroom dwelling in Chilmark, Massachusetts, completed in 2020 by Charles Rose Architects. Positioned uphill from the original Chilmark House, the structure is sited on a steep slope, capitalizing on its exposure to sunlight and views of Vineyard Sound. The project was shaped by a brief that emphasized a strong connection to the landscape, with care taken to maintain privacy from the main house while anchoring the southern edge of a small meadow. Collaboration with a landscape architect ensured integration with native vegetation and the broader site context.
The design organizes the house with bedrooms at each end, each with an en-suite bathroom, and a communal area between. The central living space features three convertible banquettes and a kitchenette with a curtain for flexible use. Large windows and a roof deck maximize outdoor access and vistas, while a mahogany-clad outdoor shower extends the living space into the landscape. Interior materials include teak, mahogany, and cork, creating a nautical character, while the exterior employs copper, cedar, and fir detailing, linking the guest house visually to both its predecessor and regional building traditions.
