Green Mountain Getaway

Green Mountain Getaway in Fayston, Vermont, is a compact guest house designed by Flavin Architects as part of a larger residential project completed in 2020. Sited near Sugarbush Resort in the Mad River Valley, the 350-square-foot structure responds to its wooded setting and adjacent meadow with a modest footprint, positioned for privacy in relation to the main house and following the site's topography. The design employs a high-performance envelope with triple-pane windows and super-insulated walls to support passive solar heating. Concrete floors, composite exterior wall panels, and exposed steel beams introduce contemporary elements, while cedar shingles, fir beams, and native stone walls establish ties to regional materials. Generous windows frame views of wildflowers and bring natural light into the compact interior, which accommodates a bedroom, kitchen, and living space. The landscape design, led by Wagner Hodgson, features stone terraces and retaining walls that extend the building's geometry into the surrounding site.
