New Additions to Hoover + Hill

New Additions to Hoover + Hill is a 2021 intervention by Flavin Architects in Lincoln, Massachusetts, augmenting the 1958 Wales house originally designed by Henry Hoover and Walter Hill. Responding to the needs of a young family for additional guest space, a home office, yoga studio, and covered parking, the project was developed to avoid altering the house’s cruciform plan while enabling new functions on the wooded site. Flavin Architects converted the former garage and workshop into a guest house that maintains the expressive timber ceiling of the original structure and introduces a slender engineered cable truss in place of original plywood framing. A wall of glazing replaces the garage door, opening views toward a slate-paved terrace and rain garden. A distinct carport and storage building, set apart from the main house, adopts a low-slope gable roof inspired by Hoover’s designs and uses galvanized steel posts and I-beams to support a cantilevered walkway. Wood lattice screens the carport and offers filtered light, while the reimagined yoga studio provides panoramic woodland views, fostering a close connection to the changing seasons. The arrangement of structures defines an outdoor living zone integrated with the surrounding landscape.
