Modern Bonsai Greenhouse

Modern Bonsai Greenhouse is a glass pavilion located in the garden of a private residence in Metro Boston, completed in 2020 by Flavin Architects. Conceived in collaboration with Peter White of ZEN Associates and set within a landscape originally designed by Ron Herman, the project responds to the brief for a structure that supports the practice of bonsai cultivation while offering a contemplative retreat. The greenhouse is designed with clear horizontal lines and exposed elements, reflecting midcentury influences and connecting the built form to its immediate planted surroundings. The building uses a painted tubular steel frame with aluminum sliding glass doors, combining a subdued anodized bronze hue with transparency to visually embed the pavilion in the landscape. Inside, a finished sitting area at the front features a green roof planted with native grasses and overlooks a Japanese rock garden, while a polished concrete floor and gas fireplace provide domestic comfort. The rear greenhouse receives light through a glass roof and includes a gravel floor with teak benches, establishing a practical space for bonsai. The potting area incorporates a discreet but advanced water and drainage system to support horticultural activities.
