Silver Hill House

Silver Hill House is a residential project by Flavin Architects, completed in 2022 in Lincoln, Massachusetts. The design takes cues from traditional farmhouses of the area through its use of standing seam metal gable roofs and board-and-batten siding. A sharply defined triangular canopy marks the entry and sets the tone for a composition of distinct pavilions. Inside, a continuous gable volume contains the main living, dining, and kitchen spaces. The kitchen island is articulated by a custom screen, a recurring detail in Flavin’s work, which contributes to spatial definition and intimacy. The fireplace and chimney are shifted to one side, opening the east end of the pavilion to floor-to-ceiling glazing. This move brings daylight deep into the kitchen area. Referencing Marcel Breuer’s modern Cape Cod houses, a screen porch supported on a steel tripod structure cantilevers outward from the main volume, reaching into the surrounding tree canopy. This porch is accessed via a screened passage and features uninterrupted cross-ventilation, including through slatted floorboards, reinforcing a connection to the landscape through both structure and airflow.
