Sonoma Mountain House

Sonoma Mountain House, by Nielsen Schuh Architects, is located in a small clearing reached via a climb through redwoods, oaks, and madrones. The house is positioned to create a sequence of openings to the dense forest, inviting shifting light and evolving views throughout the day. Responding to the dramatic topography, the organization of spaces is intended to support a sense of discovery as part of daily living. The design features a single, angled roofline that both shelters the main living spaces and orients the house toward its immediate woodland setting. A continuous deck links the pool to the guest house, bridging over the driveway and following the site’s pronounced slope. The guest house is set on a tower structure that projects over the dropping terrain, giving the impression of being elevated among the treetops. Interior spaces are open and interconnected, dissolving the distinction between inside and outside. Material choices balance refinement with the surrounding rustic landscape, while the exposed structural framework ties the architecture closely to the forest context.
