Horizon House

Horizon House, completed by Steven Holl Architects in 2020, is a contemporary residential project positioned beside a river. The dwelling is arranged as a duplex, structured around three elongated concrete rectangles. Two rectangles are set perpendicular to the river, enclosing the main residential functions, while a third, oriented parallel and raised on piers, forms a terrace completely open to horizon views. This configuration responds to a steep embankment and aims to maximize daylight, ventilation, and outlook across the landscape. The intersection of the volumes creates a tight angle, filling the interiors with light and forming dynamic spatial relationships. Rough stone bollards address the embankment, providing site stabilization. Rooms are articulated through aluminum-framed glazing and a high-performance window wall incorporating operable wood windows. Sustainable features, including geothermal heating and cooling and sedum-planted green roofs, further define the project’s environmental approach within its modernist framework.
