Brick-Weave House

Brick-Weave House is a residential project by Studio Gang Architects completed in 2009 in Chicago, Illinois. Situated on the site of a former collection of "lean-to" structures, the project began with the decision to carve out a garden space by removing the old floor and roof from a portion of the existing building. This subtractive approach left three original walls intact, enclosing the garden and shielding it from Chicago's wind and frost, thereby modifying the microclimate. The more temperate conditions created within allow for the cultivation of plant species unsuited to the region's harsher outdoor climate. The form of the house is organized around this incised garden space, which slopes from south to north. The new design rationalizes and reorders a previously disjointed site, using the remaining masonry to frame and moderate the outdoor environment. The sequence of spaces responds to the garden’s protected microclimate, resulting in a reconfigured house that weaves together interior and exterior in response to both site history and environmental needs.
