STUDIO GANG ARCHITECTS — Chicago, IL, 2008
Maisonette by Studio Gang Architects is located in Chicago, where it repurposes a former ballroom within the Ambassador West Hotel as a contemporary residence. The project reconfigures the expansive volume by introducing two raised platforms connected via a slender walkway, extending the living area vertically and leading to the second-floor bedrooms. A central void, cut from the upper slab, draws natural light deep into the plan and links the primary levels, offices, and play areas through direct sightlines, effectively dissolving conventional domestic separations. Retained masonry and exposed concrete columns give the envelope a tactile quality, contrasting the new interior interventions. Floating platforms with glass sides framed in bent steel and perforated steel handrails on the walkway contribute to the project’s material palette, emphasizing the malleability of metal. Additional steel panels with varying perforation sizes function as doors to concealed storage and help dampen sound. Technical components are discreetly integrated between structural bays, housing utilities and contemporary equipment without disrupting the spatial flow.
