Tonic Design & Construction — Hillsborough, NC, 2009

Weathering House by Tonic Design & Construction features a two-story modern exterior with layered rust and yellow finishes.

Weathering House by Tonic Design & Construction, completed in 2009 in Hillsborough, North Carolina, was shaped by an emphasis on efficient land use and a program tailored to the client's lifestyle. The design began with a compact rectangle, then divided the plan into quadrants, resulting in a hierarchy where key spaces are given greater prominence and scale. This approach allowed the building's envelope to be manipulated in response to the site and interior needs, moving away from conventional residential forms. The form is defined by a simple box wrapped in cor-ten steel, both solid and perforated, which serves as screen, rain shield, sunshade, and visual filter. Material references to agricultural structures are present in the exterior, drawing connections to regional barns and farm sheds. The weathering steel facade changes appearance over time, establishing the house as a mutable object in its verdant rural context. The palette remains limited and economical, emphasizing modern lines with rustic sensibilities.
