Solbeck Residence
Solbeck Residence, designed by Weinstein AU Architects & Urban Designers and completed in 2021, is a 1,500-square-foot home shaped by the client’s interests in aerospace design and Japanese gardens. Positioned to take in views of Puget Sound, the project arranges a series of structures—including a main residence, guesthouse with garage, laundry building, and an orchid greenhouse—around a central garden and enclosed parking court. The L-shaped configuration organizes circulation and orients the everyday living spaces toward both the gardens and distant water and mountain views. At the main level, transparency is emphasized, with clear sightlines through the house connecting the courtyards with the Olympic Mountains. Key spaces such as the kitchen and dining areas are placed to benefit from morning sunlight in the gardens and afternoon light facing the views. A two-foot glazed separation detail visually lightens the building, allowing the upper bedroom and guest quarters to appear as if they are floating above the structure.
