BA Collective — Paradise Valley, AZ, 2019

Camelback Residence, completed in 2019 by BA Collective, is a single-story, 10,000-square-foot house in Paradise Valley, Arizona. Located on a gently sloping two-acre site within a suburban neighborhood, the house is designed to evoke a desert oasis, distinct from its populated surroundings. A low concrete wall and native desert planting shield the property, while generous setbacks and strategic landscaping contribute to a sense of seclusion and buffer the house from the street and climate. The plan is structured around a series of parallel lines oriented toward a prominent geological feature in the adjacent mountain range, organizing spaces such as the entrance, living and dining areas, children’s wing, kitchen, and primary suite along a main circulation spine. Expressive cantilevered steel roofs extend up to 30 feet to shade outdoor areas and minimize heat gain by protecting glazed surfaces from direct desert sun. A consistent one-foot horizontal datum—visible in floating concrete walls, fenestration, and clerestories—unifies interior and exterior elements, creating alternating zones of solidity and transparency. Outdoor amenities including a pool, water features, tennis court, and gazebos are integrated into the landscape, with variable grading and vertical screens enhancing privacy and reinforcing the site’s sense of retreat.
