Standard — 2024

Canyon House features a gable roof with corrugated metal and stucco exterior walls, including an elevated covered patio area.

Canyon House is a 5,500-square-foot residential compound completed by Standard in 2024, situated in a secluded canyon near Coldwater Canyon Road. The project consolidates two neighboring lots into a one-and-a-half-acre property intended to serve a multi-generational family, accommodating both everyday living and large gatherings. On the eastern half of the site, a newly constructed freestanding house offers expansive, adaptable living areas alongside a separate two-bedroom dwelling designed for a live-in parent and assistant. The pre-existing house on the western side was preserved and remodeled for continued family use, complemented by a newly designed pergola on the pool deck. A landscape strategy links both homes, creating a meadow between the structures and the steep, oak-covered hillside beyond. The outdoor spaces are connected by washed concrete steps, leading from a covered outdoor room down through the meadow to the swimming pool. A board-formed concrete firepit provides a central gathering point at the base of the steps, while several new oak trees extend the surrounding natural landscape into the property. The design employs brutalist and minimal contemporary influences, integrating concrete and restrained forms in response to both the site and the brief.
