Standard — Washington/Glassell Park, Los Angeles, California.
Hidden House is a residential project by Standard located in Glassell Park, Los Angeles, occupying a seven-acre site at the edge of a secluded road known as Hidden Valley. The commission called for a new home for a young family, but restrictions due to the remote access of the site led the architects to retain as much of the existing two-bedroom structure as possible. This approach minimized potential permitting and environmental impacts while setting the foundation for significant expansion. The original cottage now forms the core of the new house, repurposed as the main living and dining areas. Additions include a new kitchen, family room, office, garage, master suite, and children's bedroom, increasing the overall area from 1,580 to 3,500 square feet. The plan organizes new and existing spaces around two courtyards: one serving as an internal focus for daily life, and another oriented outward to frame distant city views. Sustainable features are integrated throughout, such as redwood cladding, reclaimed wood, cork floors, and cotton insulation, alongside high-efficiency systems and provisions for solar energy. Landscaping relies on native plants and an onsite vegetable garden.
