Sea Cliff Sculptural

Sea Cliff Sculptural is an extensive reworking of an 8,205-square-foot residence in San Francisco’s Seacliff area, originally designed with complex triangular geometry by Timothy Pflueger. Butler Armsden Architects approached the project with a brief to open up the house’s compartmentalized and irregular rooms, aiming to maximize interior flow and take advantage of the site's expansive ocean views. Owing to historic preservation guidelines, changes to the exterior were kept subtle, leaving the transformative efforts largely focused on the interior spaces. The design introduces a sculptural staircase as a new central element, bringing visual cohesion and daylight deep into the home via steel windows. A series of arches on the main floor frame this feature. The materials palette includes stone, plaster, wood, and metal, offering a minimal and contemporary interpretation that still evokes a Mediterranean character, responding to the site’s coastal setting. The result is a sequence of interconnected spaces that layer contemporary sensibilities over the building’s historic structure.
