Yellow Studio is a garage conversion in Westwood conceived for R.B. Kitaj, an artist associated with the School of London, who sought a workspace evoking the character of van Gogh’s yellow house in Arles. The project originated from Kitaj’s request to adapt the existing structure for his use, emphasizing light and color as central concerns. Kitaj supplied oil paint samples from London to guide the selection of the exterior hue, which was matched as closely as possible with available house paint and then applied to the studio’s exterior. Callas Shortridge Architects introduced an elevated, skewed roof clad in zinc-coated metal to transform the modest building into a functional studio. This roof features a north-facing wrap-around clerestory that brings diffuse daylight into the interior, supporting Kitaj’s artistic practice. The design approach is grounded in contemporary and modern sensibilities, balancing the client’s painterly intentions with precise architectural interventions.
