Guzhai

Guzhai is a 6,877-square-foot residence by Feldman Architecture, located on a flag lot bordered by mature trees and open space. Conceived as two volumes intersecting perpendicularly, the structure zones communal living functions on the ground floor, where kitchen, dining, and family rooms connect directly to outdoor spaces. A passive cooling strategy organizes a double-height living room as a thermal anchor, drawing cooler basement air upwards through operable windows to the warmer second floor. Outdoor rooms are defined by a rear covered patio and a front trellis; architecture shapes views of the surrounding landscape and encloses a protected courtyard and pool adjacent to a guest suite intended for extended family visits. The private second story sits above, supported at one end by the lower level and at the other by the hillside, with the primary suite elevated above a stand of oaks and oriented toward distant Bay views. Children's rooms are mirrored and equally sized, divided by a shared study area. A stone-clad double-height fireplace bookends the main living spaces, while wood slats introduce varying daylight patterns. Material selections include bush-hammered travertine, reclaimed Ulin wood, and white oak paneling paired with stone and brass, creating visual contrast within a restrained palette.
