Grummer Architecture — Portland, Oregon

Villa M features a vertical wood siding exterior and a standing seam metal roof with a skylight in Portland.

Villa M, designed by Grummer Architecture in collaboration with consultant Metta Architecture, is situated in a quiet forested area of Portland, Oregon. The project responds to its natural context and client needs for both gathering spaces and private areas. The brief emphasized creating a residence that balances communal living with opportunities for solitude. The design features a street-facing facade that functions as a visual and physical buffer, providing privacy and a sense of protection. Within, the layout prioritizes interconnected spaces that allow for fluid movement and easy transitions between common and more secluded zones. The organization of the home maximizes natural light and ventilation, fostering a strong connection to the surrounding landscape. Open living areas flow toward the backyard, which is visually and spatially integrated as an extension of the interior. Large openings encourage interaction between indoor and outdoor environments, supporting both social activity and quiet reprieve.
