Tweto Architecture — Southeast Portland, Oregon, 2020

Buckman ADU is an 800-square-foot accessory dwelling unit designed by Tweto Architecture in Southeast Portland, Oregon, completed in 2020. Conceived as a multigenerational residence, the project was developed in partnership with the property owner's daughter, with the goal of maximizing both space and accessibility within city guidelines. The structure provides street presence at the front while offering direct access to the adjacent family backyard at the rear. The two-level cottage includes a vaulted living and dining area, with the kitchen set in a southern bump-out to keep the principal space open. The main floor has a bedroom and full bath, meeting Portland's Visitability standards for accessibility. A loft bedroom is located above, reached by a staircase incorporating built-in storage, positioned as a backdrop to the living area to conserve space. Large divided-lite windows and skylights introduce natural light, enhancing the sense of volume. Interior finishes include exposed wood framing, painted wood cabinetry with walnut counters in the kitchen, and a painted steel handrail at the stair and loft. The exterior combines durable painted fiber cement siding, a metal roof, and cottage-style details such as scalloped wood shingles at the porch and dormer.
