Tweto Architecture — Northeast Portland, OR

Irving Park ADU is a 325-square-foot accessory dwelling unit situated in Northeast Portland, Oregon. Designed by Tweto Architecture for a growing family, the compact structure addresses a variety of needs, ranging from guest accommodations and a home office to serving as temporary housing during renovations. Positioned in the northwest corner of a typical 50-by-100-foot residential lot, the unit’s placement defines separate outdoor areas while preserving much of the existing yard. Window openings are positioned to maintain privacy from the main house and capture natural light, with direct access provided to a south-facing private patio. The design employs tall windows, glazed doors, and a partially vaulted ceiling to cultivate a sense of spaciousness within the modest floor plan. Materials are selected for both practicality and warmth, including polished concrete floors with integrated hydronic heat, exposed wood framing, and vertical-grain Douglas Fir elements. The building envelope incorporates advanced framing and dense-pack cellulose insulation, with a continuous air barrier beneath a metal roof. Operable windows are arranged to allow for cross-ventilation and passive cooling, while a ducted mini-split system supplements climate control as needed.
