Grummer Architecture — Portland, Oregon

Cleveland House is a contemporary infill residence by Grummer Architecture in northeast Portland, designed to address the challenges of a compact urban lot. The brief called for a family home that would make efficient use of its footprint while providing a calm atmosphere and practical spaces tailored for daily living. The plan transforms traditional corridors into multifaceted zones that contribute to both circulation and function, supporting a fluid experience throughout the interior. Programmatically, the house centers around a large kitchen island, which anchors the main living spaces and accommodates daily gatherings. A mudroom is integrated for convenience, while an acoustically isolated area is dedicated to children's activities, maintaining a sense of tranquility elsewhere. Thin, strategically placed windows introduce ample daylight while preserving privacy from the street. Intricate casework, including a hidden breakfast bar and built-in storage solutions, is employed to unlock utility in limited square footage. Reading and study nooks are tucked throughout, providing quiet moments within the layout. The interiors feature a neutral palette, complemented by rich wood detailing, contributing both warmth and visual interest. Lamer Woodworking provided consultation on specialized millwork, ensuring a cohesive integration of these elements into the home's modern character.
