The Vessel by Kennerly Architecture is located in San Francisco, California, where a 1949 row house was expanded for a growing family. Two new floors were added above the original structure, with the existing house extended into the hillside to create a base of bedrooms and service spaces. A cedar picket façade wraps the front, establishing a visual continuity and providing privacy to the balcony and garage window.
The main living area occupies the new upper level, distinguished by glass walls at both ends that connect the interior to a rear garden and city views. The master suite above is defined by a facetted cedar form that appears suspended, flanked by skylights that bring natural light deep into the center of the home. The entry sequence is designed for light and spatial drama, with a skylight illuminating the junction between a venetian plaster wall and the volume overhead. Throughout, the palette includes wood, rope, and welded steel, particularly evident in the design of the stair.
