We are architects because we love working in design. Each one in our office is motivated by what it takes to define and create space; whether it is a house, a landscape, a development, a piece of furniture, a commercial space, a light fixture. It does not matter what the challenge is as much as how we go about creating the solution. We strive for harmony throughout all our projects while making every effort to offer delight and unexpected joy beyond what is anticipated. The most important factor in making this happen is you, our client. We listen to what you want to achieve—both the pragmatic functional goals and the ineffable dreams. It is our goal to make those dreams a reality for you through a cohesive, harmonious, and inspired solution. rnSeveral primary factors help us to achieve this: rnSite: We believe that every project must be seamlessly integrated into its given site whether the site is a craggy exposed cliff on San Juan Island, a dry hillside in California, or a tight urban lot wedged between existing homes. rnIndoor/Outdoor Interface: Geoff Prentiss has spent many years studying the relationship of interior and exterior spaces both in his native environment of the great PNW and in various other countries. Not only does Geoff have an extensive background in Landscape Design, but for two years; as a Monbusho Scholar, Geoff studied the interface of interior and exterior in Kobe, Japan. As a result, Prentiss Architects’ projects are rich in concepts of outdoor engagement by numerous means: placement on the site; the anticipation of arrival and departure; door and window positioning; structural massing; functional connections; and that hard to label element-aesthetics. rnLight: Whether day or night, summer or winter, a space should be rich in its illumination. By day natural light should be able to flood in. At night there should be numerous options to allow the user to vary the experience. The windows of a home are much like the eyes on the human face—not only are they the means by which one sees and engages with the world outside, they are how the world sees who you are. rnMaterials: We like our materials to be honestly expressed, and used with sensitivity to the natural world. That means always working towards restraint in the materials we utilize. We want to explore new materials but always with an eye on their life-cycle and long term performance. In the end we aspire to have every detail contribute to a harmonious integrated whole. rnOur world: From the beginning, long before the thought of green awareness ever showed up on the general radar, we at Prentiss Architects have been environmentalists. We believe that our planet and all the flora and fauna that inhabit it are precious and that it is incumbent on all of us to act responsibly and respectfully of the earth and to be mindful of our consumption. We feel it is imperative to always build, remodel and design with that in mind.
