Rutledge Street Residence

Rutledge Street Residence is a renovation of a 1950s home in San Francisco’s Bernal Heights, directed by Schwartz and Architecture. The compact site offered limited space but opportunities for abundant daylight and city views. The brief called for a reimagining of the spatial organization with an eye toward potential future expansion. A newly inserted staircase became the focal point of the intervention, positioned to allow for a possible third-floor addition. The entryway and upper level were reordered around this vertical circulation, contributing to a more open atmosphere. Schwartz and Architecture collaborated with Andre Caradec of S/U/M Architecture to design and fabricate the distinctive guardrail, whose perforated pattern changes density in relation to eye level along the stair. The chosen pattern responds to requirements for lightness and structural independence, as well as balancing design intent with constructability and budget considerations.
