Terry & Terry Architecture — Palo Alto, CA

Edgewood House features a modern flat roof design with concrete and glass elements, surrounded by mature trees.

Edgewood House is a residential renovation and expansion located in Palo Alto, California, led by Terry & Terry Architecture. The project involved transforming a 1950s Joseph Eichler home for a young deaf family, who requested a more open layout with enhanced spatial connectivity. The design retains the essential floor plan while introducing a second story, achieved by extending horizontal and vertical planes from the ground floor. The layout emphasizes visual and tactile connections throughout, aligning with DeafSpace principles to support awareness and communication within the home. The reconfiguration connects the main living spaces to the garden, making use of fired black basalt stone pavers on the ground floor and cedar wood for the ceilings. New poured-in-place concrete elements support both the upper story and the cantilevered stair, while the central roof form bridges the living and bedroom wings. On the second floor, bedrooms, bathrooms, and sleeping porches serve extended family needs. Sustainable design strategies are integrated, including passive solar orientation, deep overhangs for shading, hydronic radiant heating, photovoltaic panels, solar water heating, and a rainwater catchment system.
